A Midlothian 9th grader is using her blender and oven to help out a friend. Lindsey Cole's “Cookies for Kimmy” fundraiser has already raised more than $380 by last Friday to help out the Miller family, Cole said. Kimberly "Kimmy" Miller, a 14-year-old girl with special needs, lost her 38-year-old mother, Becky, to cancer last week. Cole helped out in Miller's classroom last school year.
Donna Dixon, the mother of one of Miller's classmates, had started a fundraising website for the Millers, www.fundsforbecky.weebly.com, Dixon said. She emailed everyone she knew to ask for donations to help the family cover medical bills and living expenses. The Cole family got the email because Lindsey Cole's brother, Nathan Cole, was in a special education class with Dixon's daughter a few years ago.
“After hearing about Kimberly's family, I was really upset and wanted to help,” Lindsey said. “It was originally going to be “Baking for Becky” but I changed it to “Cookies for Kimmy.” Lindsey called and asked if she could link her cookie fundraiser to the website, Dixon said, so the pink tags on each package of sweets includes the website link. With that detail out of the way, she put her family's kitchen and her love of baking to work mixing up brownies, cookies, flavored popcorn and other sweets to sell, her mother Carla Cole said.
“It's all from scratch,” Carla said. “She says using a box mix is cheating.”
Lindsey leaves for band practice with the Midlothian High School marching band at 6 a.m. every morning with a basket of sweets, Carla said, and doesn't get home until 4 p.m. She then starts baking for the next day. She is now the cookie girl to her band mates, Carla said. “Students are expecting cookies when she comes to school,” she said. But starting the sale wasn't easy, Lindsey said. Getting up to make an announcement about her fundraiser to the whole band was scary for the admittedly shy girl. But it paid off, she said. The next day's sweets sold faster than any other day's because the students remembered and brought money. With the goal of giving the Miller family $1,000, Lindsey plans to keep baking into the school year, she said.
“Lindsey is truly an inspiration and I hope other youth in the community will follow her example,” Dixon said.
Several friends have offered to help her bake, Lindsey said, which will help her balance band and homework.

Rebecca "Becky" Brooks Miller
Rebecca "Becky" Brooks Miller, was 38 years old when she was diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancers. She suffered with this horrible disease since June 2014. Becky passed away at Legend Oaks Health Care in Ennis, Texas on July 31, 2014. Plans are underway for a memorial / celebration of life. A date is not yet set, but will most likely take place at Ellis County Cowboy Church in Waxahachie. Details to follow.
Becky's husband is William "Billy" Miller. They have two daughters, 18 year old Victoria, and 14 year old Kimberly "Kimmy". Her family lives in Waxahachie in the Midlothian school district. Billy stayed by Becky throughout her entire battle. He did not work or receive a paycheck during this time. This was a definite hardship on the family financially. Billy returns to work next week. Now is the time when Billy and Kimmy need your prayers more than ever as well as Becky's dad and Becky's siblings. This is a difficult time and Billy and Kimmy are now taking time to grieve and remember the pleasant times with Becky. A friend of the Miller family, Marty Giesecke, has set up a new fundraising page to continue raising money to help the Millers. Before Becky's illness she had wanted to move her family into a new apartment. Billy's wants to fulfill Becky's wishes and move he and Kimmy into a new apartment. Marty's personal fundraising is to raise a year's worth of rent for the Millers so that they have one less worry during this new phase of life. They are set to move into their new apartment this month.

BECKY'S JOURNEY
BECKY UPDATE
7.27.14
Becky is truly a woman with a strong will. She was awake some today and even ate a little, according to Billy. Becky's dad and Billy's mom have really been trying to be there for Billy, Becky, Kim and Victoria. Becky's room has been filled with visitors bringing snacks and hugs. It's nice to see family and friends come together in a humble way to show their love for one another.
Kim was able to have some fun girl time Friday night and Saturday by swimming, playing games, eating out and going to see Earth to Echo. The Millers have raiased such a sweet girl and time with her is a lot of fun!
Please continue to be a blessing in the Miller family's lives by praying, helping, sending a note to Becky, and/or making a contribution.
Should you wish to email Billy directly, send it to [email protected].

BECKY UPDATE
7.26.14
It's been a rough couple of days with news that Becky may only a have a matter of hours left. The family is tired and heartbroken to watch their precious loved one be in pain. Please pray for peace for Becky and her family. Billy mentioned today that Becky is having difficulty swallowing her medicine. She ate a few grapes last night but nothing at all today.
Thanks to all the friends and family who have really stepped in to help make Kim's summer a pleasant one considering what all she is going through. She has her emotional moments but all in all she does well when preoccupied with fun activities.
We are half way to our goal because many of you been able to bless the Miller family with your generous contributions. Your blessings are going a long way!
The Millers still need prayers as this journey is lingering.

Thanks to all of you for supporting the Miller family during this difficult time. It's been tough on Billy, as you can imagine, being spread so thin financially. He is extremely thankful for all the contributions that you all have made.
Becky has had several visitors this week and has been enjoying the love and affection she has received. A handful of friends have taken turns taking Kim to do activities while Billy stays with Becky day by day. Kim has been going back and forth to be with her mom and dad in between activities.
Today Becky got a haircut that she has been wanting since she's been stuck in the bed. As soon as Billy can get a picture of her awake with her new hairdo, we can all see it posted here.
Please continue to lift up the Miller family in prayer.

Kim enjoyed dinner with my family (Donna Dixon) last night and then we took her back to see her mom while we visited her too. Becky was in good spirits and talked a little bit. We cut up a little bit and she even stuck out her tongue at Billy for fun once. It was nice to get a picture of these three together.
You can send Notes to Becky and her family by clicking here.

BECKY UPDATE
7.17.14
Billy was told today that Becky's organs are shutting down. He said he has to be strong for their youngest daughter, Kim. Billy and Becky are expecting their first grandchild from their older daughter, Victoria. The baby is due in August and this creates an especially emotional rollercoaster for the family. Becky’s care is finally being covered by Medicaid. Billy has extended his time off from work through part of August which means he is still not getting paid. Please continue to pray for the family's strength and courage.
BECKY UPDATE
7.14.14
During her stay at Baylor Dallas, Becky had her ups and downs with seizures which kept her from receiving many of her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Her seizures have subsided and she is now at Legend Oaks Health Care in Ennis receiving hospice care. The hope is she gets her strength up enough to receive treatments again.
During their daughter's visit, Billy took this picture of Kimberly "Kimmy" and Becky enjoying the outdoors for the first time in weeks. Please pray for the Millers to help them through this difficult time. |
